Celebrities tend to be very public about their love for cannabis. We regularly see photos of stars like Wiz Khalifa and Snoop Dogg parading around their joints in the most open places. Khalifa made headlines last month after announcing to his 11 million Instagram followers that he just smoked a joint at Blue Lagoon. Several states are still working towards legalization, leading many people to wonder how celebrities get away with modeling their cannabis use. Some stars have managed to enjoy a high publicly and peacefully, but some aren’t so lucky. These celebs were busted smoking weed overseas.

1. Paul McCartney

In 1980, McCartney flew to Tokyo and made the decision to attempt to smuggle over 200 grams of marijuana in with him.

“We were about to fly to Japan and I knew I wouldn’t be able to get anything to smoke over there. This stuff was too good to flush down the toilet, so I thought I’d take it with me.”

The former Fab Four member spent nine days in a Japanese jail cell before they released

and deportedhim back to the states. Not being able to smoke must of gave him a clear head, being that he broke up his band Wings upon returning to the US.

2. Joe Cocker

When it comes to big deals, Joe Crocker wore the crown in the 1970s. His 1972 Austrailian tour came close to breaking touring records that the Beatles set when they traveled around the country in 1964. However, Cocker and his band members failed to reckon with the traditional devotion of Prime Minister William McMahon’s Liberal government.

Cocker and his five band members ended up getting caught with cannabis while in Adelaide. Within a matter of days, the immigration minister signed deportation papers and gave Cocker and his band 48 hours to leave the country. The singer showed no regrets and didn’t mind letting people know his thoughts on the matter.

“In five years marijuana will be legalised in Australia, and the same cat who is trying to throw us out now will be smoking it himself.”

3. Amy Winehouse

Discussions about the jazz singer’s use of Class A drugs popped up in newspapers often. However, cannabis is what got Winehouse arrested in Norway. Joined by her husband Blake Fielder-Civil, the two were caught with 7 grams of the herb by Norwegian authorities in 2007. They received a fine of 3850 kroner ($456.73US) and were released.

4. John Lennon

Just like his Beatles bandmate McCartney, Lennon could never pass up a joint. However, the singer’s guilty plea to a 1968 possession charge came back to haunt him when his attitude towards Vietnam started to get on President Nixon’s nerves.

Nixon’s administration argued that because Lennon is a convicted drug felon, he had no right to be in the country and needed to be deported. Lennon and his wife, Yoko Ono, received help from their powerfulfriends that lobbied on their behalf and never ended up going anywhere. The case came back up in 2012 by the Obama administration as the legal basis to defer the deportation of over 580,000 immigrants.

5. Justin Bieber

In 2014 in Miami Beach, police noticed Bieber slurring and claimed he overwhelmingly smelled of budwhen they stopped him for drag racing. They arrested him, he tested positive for cannabis and failed an alcohol breathalyzer test.

In response to Bieber’s arrest, people created an online petition to have him deported and received 275,000 signatures. The petition even prompted a reply from the White House. Bieber later made a donation of $50,000 to a youth charity as part of a plea deal to settle the case, which prompted the American Civil Liberties Union to highlight the imbalance of treatment between him and other immigrants.

Do you think it’s silly to deport celebrities for cannabis? Do you know of any other stars that faced arrestment overseas? Let us know on social media or in the comments section below. We would love to hear from you.
