Cash-strapped Colorado mountain town says 'yes' to marijuana grows

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS — The northwestern Colorado town of Hayden is gearing up to start growing pot.

The Steamboat Pilot & Today reports that voters in a special election on Tuesday approved an ordinance to allow marijuana growing operations within town limits. The measure passed with 52.4 percent of the vote, with a gap of about 20 voters.

In August, the Hayden Town Council voted in favor of an ordinance that would allow grow facilities to sell their product to dispensaries outside Hayden. Retail recreational and medicinal marijuana sales are not allowed in Hayden.

Town officials say they hope the grows will provide tax revenue. The town expects to have emptied its coffers by the end of 2017 if the financial situation doesn’t change.
