But now craft beer has decided to show cannabis some love with a line that pays homage to the herb! Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery.

San Diego’s Jetty Extracts makes 80% pure THC oils. Thorn Street Brewery brews some of the finest craft beer in the nation. Now these two companies have come together on a project that every cannabis lover dreams of! Beer flavored with weed. Jetty co-founder Matt Lee says:

California has always taken pride in their beer and weed. It’s been an honor to be one of the companies to finally really bridge the two industries.

We found out a way to fraction off the terpenes through distillation prior to extraction, and then reintroduce them to the final product to get the smell back.

I approached Thorn Street first because they are my favorite brewery.

Along with hops varieties including Mosaic, Citra, and Columbus, you will find the dankness of terpenes extracted straight out of some of you favorite strains. For starters, how about some Pineapple Express? Pineapple Kush? Don’t forget some quality Girl Scout Cookies and Jack Frost are also being experimented with.

Those amazing terpenes

Jetty Extracts removes a lot of those terpenes in their concentrate process, but why not do something useful with them? The flavors of pine, grass, and a hint of citrus put that perfect tell-tale herbal aroma in the delicious beer. The combination of flavors opens up a whole new arena for craft brews. Thorn Street Brew Master & co-owner Eric O’Conner loves the daring idea.

“We love experimenting with new flavors and aromas and being on the cutting edge of craft beer. Beer is all about how it tastes, though, and the flavors from the extract really blend well with the hops. It’s a subtle flavor, and the smell is unmistakable without being overpowering.”

Taking pride in a product

Craft beer is like artisanal herb. It isn’t just about the end result, but about the experience, flavors, aromas, and enjoyment. O’Conner says that he is working closely with Lee to make the perfect combinations from different beers and cannabis strains.

“Since it’s never really been done before, we’re just trying to figure out how to get it right.”

Unfortunately, the OG High IPA has no cannabinoids, THC or otherwise. But with 4.20% alcohol, it does what it can, and does it well.

Terpene-infused-beer: Oh, the possibilities

Lee is excited not just about the pairing process, but the possibilities for his favorite beer. After all, there are only a few dozen hops varieties, and maybe a dozen specialty beers, like pumpkin or lemon. Cannabis, on the other hand, has thousands of strains.

“We could open up thousands of different smells and aromas.”

O’Conner agrees. Adding a new source of flavor profiles increases the potential exponentially.

“It’s kind of like pairing hops with essential oils.”
